Abstract

The public school system in El Salvador is not one of the best education systems in regards to teaching methodologies for English classes because it has a lot of deficiencies, especially in students who are in third cycle, because the majority of teachers use the traditional method for teaching English. Furthermore, English teachers are still using the traditional method based only in book’s instructions, and the teacher plays the role of a controller, as a result students are just receptive of the information and they do not have the opportunity to develop their English skills. Moreover, English teachers in El Salvador have to follow the curriculum provided by the Ministry of Education and this curriculum has ten years without any modification, for that reason teachers and students are working with the same traditional methodology in the environment where they do not have the experience of a different English methodology, such as an innovative method based on students’ needs with technological resources. Some issues that are affecting the learning process of the students from school Cantón Aldea de las Mercedes are described below: The first issue presented in the English teaching is that teachers are still implementing the traditional method in their classes; they are not updated with different innovative strategies and technological tools to teach. The second issue is that teachers have the opportunity to teach with the technological tools that they have in the school such as: computer lab, CD player, projectors and so on, but they do not use them. The third issue is the lack of interest of the students to learn English, some students attend to the classes because they have to attend and just a few of them have enthusiasm to learn, furthermore the traditional methodology that the teacher applies creates a lack of interest on the students. In addition, English methodology should be changed at school Cantón Aldea de las Mercedes because the students need to learn with an innovative methodology, in which the technological resources, the application of strategies and classroom activities; help them to improve their academic performance. However, the research team wants to apply an innovative method based on the book Joyful Fluency Model: Brain-Compatible Second Language Acquisition, whose purpose is to provide a practical guide for those teachers who wish to learn how to use the brain-compatible acquisition model to enhance language teaching and learning; so that teachers can make a transition from the traditional method to one that is more dynamic and innovative. The main purpose of this study is to compare the two different methods (the traditional method and the innovative method) of teaching applied in English syllabus, of third cycle, not only to facilitate the acquisition of a new language to the students, but also to provide didactic materials to English teachers at school of Nejapa.
