Abstract

Nowadays in the 21st century concentration has become a challenge for all people, the hectic world that surrounds us does not allow us to be focused in our daily activities such as at work, school, conferences, etc. Some of the most common problems students experience in class is lack of concentration. Student’s learning process can be affected by a variety of elements such as technology, noise, how crowded the classroom is, interest student has for the subject, etc. These elements can be classified in different categories such as: psychological factors, motivational factors, physical factors, environmental factors, etc. Many students of the University of El Salvador especially the ones who are learning a second language face this problem very often. It is really important to clarify that learning another language requires more attention to successfully achieve the comprehension of it. Based on this problematic, this research was carried out specifically to study the physical and motivational factors that influenced students´ concentration in class on students of the B.A in Modern Languages specialization in French and English in the English intermediate II course, semester I, 2017. The aim of this research was to determine the most common physical factors that affect student's concentration in class and at the same time to analyze the intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors that students went through during the process of learning a second language. The following research work made use of the qualitative descriptive method since a detailed description of the phenomenon was done and researchers always stayed closer to the data. A variety of techniques were used in such as observations, interviews and questionnaires. Researchers observed the group of students of English Intermediate II for one month, investigators passed a survey to the students and interviews were performed as well not only to students but also to teachers and experts of the field such as psychologists. All these techniques were performed in order to validate the results of the project and to demonstrate the findings are accurate. Finally the results were put in graphics to have better comprehension and were analyzed to provide specific solutions or recommendations to the problematic that is affecting student’s performance.
