Abstract

Learning English has become very important in a globalized world, but El Salvador is far from providing this key element to students in the public system. This action research work was aimed at implementing a special program designed for first graders of Centro Escolar Católico ―Nuestra Señora de Fátima; these students were not able to write or read in the first language when they started the school year, contrary to what happens in private schools where students can read and write and start taking English classes from kindergarten. The objectives of this action research work were supporting the development of the students‘ fine motricity skills, reducing students‘ anxiety through the use of special learning strategies, spotting and helping them reduce the learning problems that students may have had during classes describing and systematizing the learning and teaching experience and assessing the students English learning results after having implemented the program. The methodology to carry out this research was mainly qualitative as the process of learning English is explained based on information obtained through class observation; besides, it includes some quantitative information related to parents‘ and students‘ general background. The results of this research helped the students, their parents and the English teachers of the Cento Escolar Catòlico ―Nuestra Señora de Fátima‖. First graders improved their fine motricity skills, acquired English vocabulary and developed some basic linguistic skills in English. In addition, the school received a copy of the program specifically designed for the school first graders; and finally, future English teachers will have a specially designed English program and the didactic material that was donated to the school.
